Gustavys Woodson Smith's "A" Corps not only acted as scouts for other divisions in the Mexican War, but also designed fortifications. Smith's career is notable on its own merit, but memoirs afford readers a look at men, such as Robert E. Lee, who would subsequently rise to greatness. Leonne Hudson also provides appendices containing excerpts from Cadmus Wilcox's History of the Mexican War,originally published in 1892, and a roster of recommended promotions kept by Smith.
