Manuscript Resources on The History of Education
This guide describes collections documenting the history of education in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections (LLMVC) at LSU. It includes the papers of education officials; college deans; university presidents; professors; principals; teachers; and students. It also contains some records of defunct universities, colleges, and schools. There are a number of collections containing records of teachers' associations and student clubs and organizations.
Records of Louisiana State University, which are part of the LSU University Archives, and the papers of LSU faculty, students, and alumni, are not described in this guide unless they also relate to education apart from LSU. A separate guide to the papers of LSU faculty, students, and alumni is forthcoming. Many University Archives records are described in the University Archives section of the Special Collections web site.
The guide contains school notebooks of elementary and university students; term papers and theses; diplomas; and materials on medical and legal education. There is also information about public, private, and parochial schools; higher education; and school integration. Most of the collections are from Louisiana, but there are also materials from other parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Bedou, A. P. (Arthur P.), 1882-1966. Photograph of Dillard University, between 1935 and 1952. 1photograph; 8 x 39.5 in. Location: OS:B. Arthur P. Bedou was a black photographer in New Orleans during the early and middle 20th century. He was a photographer for Xavier University and Booker T. Washington. A panoramic photograph of Dillard University depicting Rosenwald Hall on the left and Kearney Hall in the center. The photograph was taken from Gentilly Boulevard shortly after the university was founded in 1930. It was taken after 1935, but before 1952 based on the buildings depicted in the photograph. Letters, documents, and plantation diaries reflect plantation economy, the administration of secondary schools, the history and administration of the Baptist Church, and civilian and military participation in the Civil War. Bertrand, Alvin Lee, 1918- interviewee. Oral history interview, 1995. 5 sound cassettes (7.5 hours), transcript (276 p.). Location: L:4700.0524. LSU alumnus and Boyd Professor of Sociology/Rural Sociology. Bertrand discusses growing up in rural Louisiana and the French language and Cajun culture. Bertrand also discusses loss of the small farm way of life, agricultural mores, and the impact of mechanization on rural life in Louisiana. Bertrand describes the general layout of the LSU campus in 1936, the creation of the LSU lakes, the LSU stadium, and student social activities. He comments on the many changes he witnessed while at LSU and details his long association with LSU and the Sociology Dept. He also discusses the development of rural sociology at LSU; his own involvement in international organizations; his work as an international rural sociologist; and his research and studies on health care needs. Billiu, John S. Friendship album, 1856-1860. 1 volume. Location: G:20. This friendship album or \"alba amicorum\" contains inscriptions from college friends of John S. Billiu of New Orleans, La. Most inscriptions were written by friends from various Southern states attending Centenary College of Louisiana and the University of Virginia between 1856 and 1857. Scottish immigrant, storekeeper, and planter who came to Adams County, Mississippi, from North Carolina. Collection includes personal and business papers of John Bisland, Sr., and his sons Peter, James, Alexander, John, and William, relating to the establishment and development of Bisland plantations near Natchez, Mississippi, mercantile enterprises, and family and local activities including education and health. Colonel in the United States Army and commandant of LSU ROTC cadet corps. Blakeney describes his personal and educational background, his early interest in the military, and his involvement in ROTC while a student at LSU. He recounts his military assignments in the United States, Europe during WWII, and Vietnam in the1960s. He relates his views on ROTC at LSU; the effects of Vietnam War protests on the program, and he offers recollections of Dean Arden French and Dean James Reddoch of LSU.
