Manuscript Resources on The History of Education
This guide describes collections documenting the history of education in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections (LLMVC) at LSU. It includes the papers of education officials; college deans; university presidents; professors; principals; teachers; and students. It also contains some records of defunct universities, colleges, and schools. There are a number of collections containing records of teachers' associations and student clubs and organizations.
Records of Louisiana State University, which are part of the LSU University Archives, and the papers of LSU faculty, students, and alumni, are not described in this guide unless they also relate to education apart from LSU. A separate guide to the papers of LSU faculty, students, and alumni is forthcoming. Many University Archives records are described in the University Archives section of the Special Collections web site.
The guide contains school notebooks of elementary and university students; term papers and theses; diplomas; and materials on medical and legal education. There is also information about public, private, and parochial schools; higher education; and school integration. Most of the collections are from Louisiana, but there are also materials from other parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Wood, Jonathan L. Family papers, 1830-1879 (bulk 1830-1863). 50 items. Location: B:18. Family correspondence to Jonathan L. Wood, Macoupin County, Ill., from Cumberland County, Ky. The letters describe the hardships of early settlers; the marriages, deaths, and health; droughts and other weather events; crops conditions; and the rigors of farming. Several letters tell of the conflicts between religious groups contending for new parishioners and influence in the community. Woodruff, Clark, 1791-1851. Letter, 1834 Oct. 21. 1 letter. Location: Misc. Clark Woodruff was a state representative for West Feliciana Parish (1826-28), judge of the eighth judicial district court (1828-36), and manager of the Myrtles Plantation. Clark Woodruff writes from Madisonville, La., to Morris Woodruff in Litchfield, Conn., regarding his sending of a check to pay off a note, the education of his daughter Mary Octavia under Morris' care, his own poor health, his being cheated out of an election, and Whig Party presidential politics. Woods, Beverly Babin. Collection, 2002-2008. 5 items. Location: Misc.:W. Genealogist, poet, and writer. Walter William Williams was an advocate of education and voting rights for African Americans in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Research material written and compiled by Beverly Babin Woods on the life and work of Walter Hamilton Williams includes biographical sketches of Williams and typed transcriptions of excerpts taken from his letters and reports relating to the education of freedmen and political elections. Educator and charity activist of New Orleans, Louisiana; principal of the Home Institute, a day and boarding school for young ladies, and organizer of the Free Night School for working men and boys. Items removed from scrapbooks include letters of appreciation, programs, invitations, and other materials documenting Wright's career as an educator and philanthropist.
