This guide to manuscripts collections on the history of New Orleans before 1861 covers topics such as trade and shipping; cotton and sugar; the War of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans; the Mexican War; and art, opera, plays and literature in New Orleans. It includes the records of residents of and visitors to New Orleans, planters, physicians, attorneys, politicians, soldiers, clergymen, educators, merchants, factors and commission merchants, banks, and businesses located in New Orleans and other states.

Materials represented in this guide include land deeds and sales, slave sales, bills of lading, papers (personal, financial, legal, business), educational materials, personal and business correspondence, diaries, poems, sheet music, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

New Orleans physician and scientific writer, Confederate medical authority, and president of the Louisiana State Board of Health. Papers consist of manuscript writings by Jones pertaining to investigations of various diseases, studies on American archaeology and anthropology, and published and unpublished papers on Confederate medical history. Jonte, Louis F. Papers, 1851-1878. 11 items. Location: A:117. Resident of New Orleans, Louisiana. Collection contains a conveyance and survey for land purchased in Lafayette, La. (1851), promissory note (1855), certification of his status as a naturalized United States citizen (Feb. 5, 1864), an act of procurement authorizing Louis F. Jonte to represent William Tujague (March 14, 1864), and Franklin Jonte's residency registration (1878). The collection also contains a cabinet card photograph of Louis Jonte (ca. 1860). Mss. 5256.
